Does anybody know what tool was used to annotate the roads?

Great work on the paper! However, it is still not clear to me how you annotated those labels. Did you use QGIS to create polygons of road width and then burn them into raster?
QGIS was used to select tiles. Photoshop was used for actually drawing the labels.
